A conservation strategy is an effort by a group of specialists in one or more animal or plant species, who consider it necessary to carry out coordinated conservation efforts to protect that species or those species.

The need for coordination in the conservation of a species can arise because the geographic range of that species or group of species extends beyond political boundaries or across multiple ecological zones, and therefore requires different political entities, groups of scientists, conservationists, local communities and decision-makers to act together.
